Reflections: Finding Community in a Local Church

I recently came across the term third places. A third place is a place you feel safe going to that is a place other than your home, school or workplace. A third place can be a park, coffee shop or even a church but it is a place where you find belonging and support.

This made me reflect on some things as I am someone who prefers to stay home and be on my own most of the time. I realize that I am missing out on the many benefits that come with gathering with others in a physical place.

I tune into church online and I am thankful that technology makes this possible but I realize it is never going to be better than attending a service in person. I miss out on the chance to encourage others in real time and I find it’s not the same to pray and worship on my own during the service.

I am not against having an online community to exchange ideas or to do a Bible reading plan with others but it can not replace being in person with others. One other aspect of attending church in person is that you have a pastor that actually knows who you are and can be a mentor.

The song “Beautiful Bride” by Flyleaf made me reflect more on this and how important it is to find a supportive group to belong to. You can listen to the song below.

I believe the local church is the best place to show the love of Jesus to others. I pray to find a local church I can attend in person in the future. Please pray for me about this. If you do attend a local church what is your favorite aspect about it?
