Those who are visually impaired know that the updates made to credit cards where the embossed name and numbers are removed has made these cards even more inaccessible. Those who are visually impaired living in the United States have to deal with more than inaccessible credit and debit cards, the physical dollar bills are not accessible as they are all the same size. There are apps that can identify dollar bills but this problem could easily be solved by making each dollar amount a different size when printing them.

To get a good example of how cash can be made accessible to those who are blind or have low vision look at the euro banknotes.

I recently found out about the Touch Card by Mastercard, an accessible card for those who are visually impaired. According to Mastercard “The Touch Card feature creates an accessible system of payment cards with unique, tactile notches — rounded for debit, squared for credit and triangular for prepaid — so anyone can identify their cards with just a touch.”

I know that there are ways of organizing cards in a wallet to be able to tell them apart but I think that this is a much better solution and I am thankful that a large company such as Mastercard cares about making their products accessible to people who are blind or have low vision.

This shows how it does not take a large amount of technology to make a product accessible. I hope this will inspire more companies to make their products inclusive and accessible.

What do you think of these cards? I hope this information is helpful for you.
