Reflections: Life Lessons from Proverbs Chapter 19

Golden treasure chest illustration with the word "WISDOM" above it in large, bold, uppercase golden letters. The image uses a black background, and both the chest and text have a hand-drawn, woodcut style. The chest is closed and features a keyhole, symbolizing the treasure of wisdom.

The book of Proverbs found in the Bible is like a manual for life. This book contains advice for all aspects of life. Here are some life lessons I have learned from Proverbs chapter 19.

Wisdom is better than anything else

Seeking out wisdom will always be worth it in the end. Wisdom will save you from many mistakes and from much trouble.

“He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.” – Proverbs 19:8 (King James Version)

“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.” – Proverbs 19:20 (King James Version)

Money impacts relationships

Money is a powerful tool or asset and whether we want to admit it or not it can complicate relationships, this is true for friendships and romantic relationships and it is wise to be aware of this. Now this does not apply to everyone but there are people who are only driven by money and will only do things for money.

People who are very wealthy have to constantly examine the people around them and the motives those people truly have, while those who are poor usually find themselves alone.

There is nothing wrong with being wealthy but it comes with a cost. On-the-other-hand, the poor have the advantage of knowing who their true friends are.

“Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.” – Proverbs 19:4 (King James Version)

Lying leads to trouble

I have covered this before but it is good that I remind myself and just share it here again, lying only leads to trouble. A lie may seem to work at the beginning and it may seem to work even for years but in the end all will be revealed.

“A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.” – Proverbs 19:9 (King James Version)

Anger management is wise

When you learn to control your anger you will be seen as a wise person. It is a good thing to show grace and let things go.

“The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.” – Proverbs 19:11 (King James Version)

Family

I am not married and do not have children but here are some important lessons for mothers, fathers and children. It is important to correct children when they do not obey and to not let things get out of control. Children, you should obey your parent’s instructions as it is for your best. I do believe that a home should be a peaceful place and not filled with fighting and drama.

“Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.” – Proverbs 19:18 (King James Version)

It is wise to work hard

It is dangerous to become lazy and do nothing. There is always something you can do even if you are not doing an actual job. However, if you can work you should work. I think that if you fall into a pattern of laziness it can lead to sadness. I have experienced this myself so I have learned to stay occupied. Now it is important to take time to rest each week but all in moderation.

“Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.” – Proverbs 19:15 (King James Version)

Being generous is a good thing

When you are generous and give back and support others it shows love in action. It is important to be generous out of love and not expect anything back and remember that God does reward generosity.

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” – Proverbs 19:17 (King James Version)

Trust God each day

We can plan out our lives all we want but in the end we can never be certain of what will happen. I believe that the best thing is to trust God and remain on God’s side.

“There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.” – Proverbs 19:21 (King James Version)
