The book of Proverbs in the Bible is the best place to find practical advice for all aspects of life. Here are some life lessons I have learned from Proverbs chapter 20.
Alcohol equals trouble
Drinking alcohol is an activity that can easily lead to trouble. Many people think they can keep it under control but most of the time it is alcohol that will have the power in the end. The best and most wise thing to do is to stay away from any kind of drink that contains alcohol.
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” – Proverbs 20:1 (King James Version)
The role of government is to protect the people
Today, the government has become too powerful and out of control. The Bible makes it clear that the main purpose for the government is to protect the people of that nation, state or city. Government should not control everything, it should just ensure the safety of every citizen.
“A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.” – Proverbs 20:8 (King James Version)
“A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.” – Proverbs 20:26 (King James Version)
How to have good character
One way to have good character is to control anger. It is not good to be fighting.
“It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.” – Proverbs 20:3 (King James Version)
Another way to have good character is to have integrity in all you do in life.
“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” – Proverbs 20:7 (King James Version)
It is also very important to respect and honor your parents.
“Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.” – Proverbs 20:20 (King James Version)
Treat everyone equally
It is important to treat everyone equally and not treat someone better or worse because they are rich or poor or of a different race.
“Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.” – Proverbs 20:10 (King James Version)
It is important to work hard
It is important to not make excuses when it comes to work. If you are able to work then you should work hard.
“The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.” – Proverbs 20:4 (King James Version)
Getting money the easy way may seem fun but it will not be good at the end.
“ An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.” – Proverbs 20:21 (King James Version)
Always seek advice before starting a new thing
It is important to seek godly advice before starting a new thing. The best thing to do is to pray and read the Bible and if you seek advice from others it should be a person who is mature in the faith.
“Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.” – Proverbs 20:18 (King James Version)
